چکیده

This work presents an overview of accelerating machines We begin by exploring the history of the accelerating machine and the potential power that it provides We look at some of the problems that could be solved with an accelerating machine and we review some of the possible implementation methods that have been presented Finally we review the limitations of accelerating machines and conclude by posing some problems for further research

Super-tasks, accelerating Turing machines and uncomputability

Accelerating Turing machines are abstract devices that have the same computational structure as Turing machines, but can perform super-tasks. I argue that performing super-tasks alone does not buy more computational power, and that accelerating Turing machines do not solve the halting problem. To show this, I analyze the reasoning that leads to Thomson's paradox, point out that the paradox rest...

New Ideas for Accelerating Particles

Many different schemes can be devised for accelerating particles. In recent years several concepts, radically different from those in common use, have been suggested. Many of these have failed to live up to the hopes of their inventors. Now that we seem near the end of the road for large conventional machines there is a renewed interest in alternatives, especially those involving lasers. After ...

The Cern Heavy Ion Accelerating Facility

CERN’s Lead Ion Accelerating Facility has been operating successfully for its first physics run. The facility, supported financially by some member states and designed, built and installed in a collaboration with several other laboratories (not only from member states), features a completely new linac and a major up-grade of the existing CERN machines. This paper reviews the design philosophy a...

Zeno machines and hypercomputation

This paper reviews the Church-Turing Thesis (or rather, theses) with reference to their origin and application and considers some models of “hypercomputation”, concentrating on perhaps the most straight-forward option: Zeno machines (Turing machines with accelerating clock). The halting problem is briefly discussed in a general context and the suggestion that it is an inevitable companion of an...

Accelerating Corpus Search Using Multiple Cores

The Manatee corpus management system on which the Sketch Engine is built is efficient, but unable to harness the power of today’s multiprocessor machines. We describe a new, compatible implementation of Manatee which we develop in the Go language and report on the performance gains that we obtained.
